Zlin Z-242L

ZlinThe Zlin Z-242L, manufactured by Morvan Inc. is used by Sault college for flight training from the basic level through to the commercial and instrument training as well as EMT. The aircraft is equipped for day and night, VFR and IFR conditions. The sturdy design enables aerobatic training and exercise. The limit load factors are positive 6"g" and negative 3.5"g". The power plant is a Lycomming AEIO-360-A1B6 which provides 200hp.

The Zlin Z242L has three operational categories Aerobatic(A), Utility(U), and Normal(N) . Each category allows for different operations. The aerobatic category allows for full aerobatic maneuvers and inverted flight. The utility category enables spin training. And the normal category allows for greater fuel capacity when on cross country trips.

Piper Seminole PA-44

Piper SeminoleThe Piper Seminole is a twin engine, retractable gear, airplane. It has seating for up to four occupants and has a two hundred pound capacity luggage compartment. The seminole is powered by two 180hp. Lycoming engines. It has constant speed counter rotating propellers, which provide balanced thrust during takeoff and climb and eliminates the critical engine factor in single engine flight. This make the Seminole an excellent multi-IFR trainer.

Flight Simulation at Sault College

Flight simulation represents a major part of the curriculum at Sault College Aviation. Many flight skills can be safely perfected in the simulators. Sault College operates one Frasca and two Mechtronix flight training devices.

The Frasca is a type-specific Zlin 242 FTD, modified by Sault College from a generic Frasca 242 and certified in 2003. In 2005 it was upgraded with a modern instructor station and IFR certified KLN 94 GPS system. Current plans are to upgrade the visual system to a 210° wrap-around 3-channel system which will allow enhanced ab-initio training of the visual flight exercises, in addition to the IFR training and cockpit procedures training currently being conducted.

The Mechtronix Ascent FTD's are state-of-the-art, simulators, acquired and certified by Sault College in 2002, which represent the College's Piper Seminole twin-engine aircraft. They are fitted with the same avionics as the aircraft, including the KLN94 and Flight-Director/Autopilot. These simulators are also convertible to generic , single-engine airplanes and serve as back-ups to the Frasca for single-engine training. They are each equipped with a 150° 3-channel custom visual system and a Jeppesen navigation data-base.
