"Looking back on my experience in the CYW program, I realize how much of a positive benefit it was towards my goal of becoming a Probation & Parole Officer for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
My job requires a great deal of individual counselling with my clients who come from a variety of backgrounds. The counselling component of the course helped me gain the confidence, tools and insight to be effective in this aspect of the job. Also invaluable were my community placements in a variety of settings. I spent some time in a section nine classroom, working with students who had behavioural problems or learning disabilities; at an open custody facility for youth involved with the Courts and finally at a treatment oriented custody for adults. The time spent at these placements went a long way in helping me to decide the direction I wanted to take for a career and provided me with at the determination, focus and understanding of the commitment required to reach my goal.
The teachers were very helpful and knowledgeable and went out of their way to provide a great learning experience for me. I would strongly recommend that you consider this Program if you are considering a future in a helping profession. "
