Our History

The first E.C.E. program in Ontario was offered at Centennial College in 1965. This was followed in the years afterwards by program offerings at Mohawk, Seneca, Conestoga, Fanshawe, Confederation, Humber, Niagara, Lambton, St. Lawrence and Sir Sanford Fleming by 1969.

At Sault College, our ECE program began as a part-time one off-campus, and started in a full-time mode in the fall of 1974. Leah Bannerman was instrumental in developing the foundation areas of study to meet the guidelines of the provincial ECE Advisory Committee at the time. Working as both the full time supervisor of the Sault College nursery school/parent cooperative, and coordinator of the ECE program, Leah established an exemplary reputation for our graduates.

Later, with the active participation of Coordinator Bev Browning as the northern representative on the provincial College Standards and Accreditation Committee (CSAC), the ECE program instituted the provincially established standards. These skill sets represent the graduate's current requirements for entry to practice in the field of ECE.

Our program continues to enjoy an excellent reputation, both locally and provincially. Our faculty keep up-to-date with current trends in the field, for example early brain research and emergent curriculum, in order to impart quality learning. Our close philosophical affiliation with our Child Development Centre enables us to help students practice documentation and the Project Approach.
