When you study with us, you will also be taking courses from several academic departments to broaden your learning and complement the courses offered in your program. This page will provide information about the Department of Language and Communication.
Language and communication is becoming increasingly important in today’s workplace. With tools such as email, Twitter, and Facebook being used professionally along with traditional memos, letters, and reports, it has been estimated that the average worker will spend roughly 12 ½ hours out of every 40-hour week writing (Gerson & Gerson, 2010). It is no wonder, then, that professional writing is a key component of the college curricula.
Students in all programs of study take at least one communication course at Sault College. Forms of writing, use of research and documentation, and effective workplace communications are the topics studied. Students will learn the APA documentation system and the importance of documenting all sources in their academic papers. As well, communications courses will prepare students for job interviews and employment readiness.
Academic Honesty
All submissions must be the student’s individual work. Any student engaging in academic dishonesty, as defined in the “Student Code of Conduct”, will receive automatic failure for that submission and/or such other penalty, up to and including expulsion from the program/College. Collaboration is not allowed unless pre-approved or requested by the professor. Unauthorized collaboration constitutes plagiarism and will be treated as such. All first-level Language and Communication courses include a unit on Research and Documentation to ensure that all Sault College students can successfully use APA (or in some cases MLA) for referencing source material. Students are encouraged to use Safe Assign as protection against inadvertent plagiarism.
The Write Place
The Write Place is a faculty-led tutorial drop-in location for all students. Those students who may have questions or concerns about their assignments, essays, reports, resumes and APA requirements, may bring them to college language professors for assistance.
The Write Place will operate Mondays 11:30-1:30 in Room E2110 and Wednesdays 2:30-4:30 in Room E 2130. As well, students who are unable to access the tutoring hours due to a variety of academic and personal obligations may submit their questions by e-mail thewriteplace@saultcollege.ca for feedback and direction.
APA Research and Documentation
All first-level Language and Communication courses include a unit on Research and Documentation to ensure that all Sault College students can successfully use APA (or in some cases MLA) for referencing source material.
