Ontario College Advanced Diploma
As a Child and Youth Worker, you will be recognized as someone who can serve as a valuable resource to help children, youth and their families make positive changes in their lives. Through your learning experience at Sault College, you’ll develop a strong understanding of the social, emotional and behavioural challenges affecting young people and their families and learn how to use your skills and knowledge to motivate and support them in ways that are meaningful and significant. This is a program that can lead to work that is exciting, fulfilling, empowering and is purposeful. As a Child and Youth Worker, you will enter into the lives of others to teach them social and life skills and support them in managing behaviour and forming positive relationships based on commitment, respect and effective communication.
As our world changes, the role of the Child and Youth Worker has become even more interesting. At Sault College, CYW students learn the skills and knowledge to work in a wide range of settings and engage in prevention, intervention and treatment activities of various kinds. You will receive solid training in the field areas of counselling, group dynamics, recreation, psychology and social issues, with a strong emphasis on activity based learning that includes practice and application.
As a student, you will also be given supervised community practicum experiences in several different settings. Unlike other Colleges, Sault College offers you work placements alongside the academic courses you take so you can practice and process what you are learning. Theory and application are woven throughout the program so you have many opportunities to gain experience and learn from the experiences of others. The accreditation you receive when successful is recognized as an Advanced Diploma by the provincial government, is accepted throughout Canada, and grants you eligibility for full professional membership in the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Counsellors (OACYC) subject to applicable membership fees and requirements. As a member of an established profession within the human services field, you’ll follow a professional code of ethics that guides and supports your work.
Most students complete the CYW diploma in three academic years (6 semesters) but you can also choose to take it over three to five years to accommodate personal or professional needs. Whichever path you take, you will have the support and guidance of your teachers every step of the way.
