Off-Campus Housing Glossary

Apartment: a self-contained living area with a lockable door. These may be in an apartment complex, or attached to a family home. Apartments fall under the Landlord Tenant Act.

Co-Signer: someone other than yourself that will sign the lease with you saying that if anything happens to the property it will still be covered by another person.

Furnished: the living area is furnished, up to and including bedrooms, and kitchen.

House: means that you would be renting a full house. Often you are responsible for finding your housemates and signing the lease as a group. Sometimes, though, the landlord will rent out a house one room at a time. This falls under the Landlord Tenant Act.

Lease: a binding contract between a landlord and tenant. Be sure to read this carefully before signing.

Light Housekeeping: a room in someone's house where you have access to the kitchen facilities. Light Housekeeping does not fall under the Landlord Tenant Act.

Negotiable: the landlord has no set price on rent and you will agree on the amount when talking with your landlord prior to moving in. The price may depend on a number of variables, including the required amenities.

P-Patch: this is the area to the east of the college; all the streets in this area start with the letter "P".

Partially Furnished: some but not all furniture is provided by the landlord. This will vary from landlord to landlord, so make sure you ask specifically.

Room & Board: a room in someone's house where they will provide meals for you. This type of accommodation does not fall under the Landlord Tenant Act.

Unfurnished: there will be no furniture in the unit. The fridge and stove will normally still be in the house, however not all houses or apartments will have laundry facilities.
